Restoring your Wooden Decking

Having issues with an ageing deck in your garden? Restoring a wooden deck in poor condition involves several key steps. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you bring it back to life:

🔍 1. Inspect the Deck

  • Check for damage: Look for rotting wood, loose nails/screws, splinters, and wobbly boards or railings.

  • Test for rot: Press a screwdriver into suspect wood—if it sinks easily, that board needs replacing.

🧹 2. Clean the Deck Thoroughly

  • Clear debris: Sweep leaves and dirt off the surface and between boards.

  • Wash the deck: Use a deck cleaner and a stiff brush or a pressure washer (on low setting) to remove dirt, mildew, and old stain.

Tip: Let the deck dry for 24–48 hours after washing.

🛠️ 3. Repair and Replace Damaged Parts

  • Replace rotten or warped boards.

  • Tighten loose screws or nails; replace nails with deck screws if needed.

  • Sand rough spots or splintered areas with coarse-grit sandpaper.

🧴 4. Apply Wood Brightener (Optional but Recommended)

  • This helps restore the wood’s natural color and improve stain penetration.

  • Apply with a pump sprayer or brush, then rinse off after 15–20 minutes.

🪵 5. Sand the Deck (If Necessary)

  • Especially if:

    • Old stain/paint is peeling.

    • Wood is very rough or splintery.

  • Use a floor sander for large areas; a hand sander for railings and corners.

  • Clean up the dust thoroughly afterward.

🎨 6. Seal, Stain, or Paint

  • Choose a finish:

    • Clear sealant: Highlights natural wood, minimal UV protection.

    • Semi-transparent stain: Balances color and wood grain visibility.

    • Solid stain/paint: Best coverage, hides imperfections, longest-lasting.

  • Apply with a brush, roller, or sprayer. Usually 1–2 coats, depending on product instructions.

⏳ 7. Let It Cure

  • Avoid walking or placing furniture on it for 24–72 hours (check product label).

🧽 Ongoing Maintenance Tips

  • Sweep regularly to prevent buildup.

  • Reseal every 1–3 years, depending on exposure and type of finish.

  • Address mildew or algae early with a deck cleaner.
